2-10-2024 (JERUSALEM) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a stern warning to Iran following a missile attack on Tuesday, 1 October, promising that the Islamic Republic would “pay” for its actions. The assault, which saw more than 180 ballistic missiles launched at Israel, has dramatically heightened fears of a wider regional conflict.
Netanyahu’s resolute stance was echoed by Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, who monitored the interception efforts from a command centre. Gallant emphasised that those who attack Israel face severe consequences, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the attack was in retaliation for Israeli actions against militant leaders and its operations in Lebanon and Gaza. The assault marked the first use of Iran’s hypersonic Fattah missiles, with Tehran boasting a 90% success rate in hitting Israeli targets.
Despite the scale of the attack, Israeli authorities reported no casualties within Israel, though one fatality was recorded in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military’s air defences, supported by a US-led coalition, intercepted most incoming missiles. However, some damage was reported, including a heavily impacted school in the central city of Gadera.
The international community has responded swiftly to the escalation. US President Joe Biden expressed unwavering support for Israel, describing Iran’s attack as “ineffective”. The White House promised “severe consequences” for Iran, though specifics were not outlined.
Iran, for its part, has warned of “vast destruction” should Israel retaliate, threatening to target regional assets of any Israeli allies who become involved. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that their action was concluded unless provoked further, indicating a potential de-escalation point.
The United Nations and European Union have called for immediate calm, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemning the “escalation after escalation” and urging a ceasefire.
This latest development comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, with Israel intensifying its operations in Lebanon and continuing its conflict in Gaza. The situation has raised concerns about a potential wider war involving Iran and the United States.
