29-6-2023 (SINGAPORE) The National University of Singapore (NUS) has made history by becoming the first Asian university to make it to the top 10 of the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024. NUS climbed from 11th to eighth place, making it the highest-ranked Asian university and the first from Asia to enter the top 10.
The QS rankings are typically dominated by universities from the United States and the United Kingdom. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its position as the top-ranked university, followed by the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in second and third place, respectively. Harvard University and Stanford University rounded out the top five.
The current update methodology of the QS rankings includes three new metrics: an institution’s commitment to sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network. The weighting for previous metrics, such as academic reputation, has gone down from 40% to 30%, while employer reputation went up from 10% to 15%.
NUS is ranked seventh for employment outcomes, 15th for academic reputation, and 64th for citations per faculty. Meanwhile, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) fell from the 19th to the 26th spot in the latest table. The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) made its debut in 429th place, and Singapore Management University (SMU) was in 545th position.
