5-2-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak expressed deep disappointment after the Pardons Board decided to commute his sentence instead of granting him a full pardon, according to his daughter Nooryana Najib.
Ms. Nooryana, known as Yana, shared her father’s sentiments during her visit to him at Sungai Buloh Prison. In an Instagram reel posted on February 3, she recounted Najib’s words: “Disappointed, very, very disappointed. You know, Yana, the worst feeling is when you are in shock and there is no one to speak to. You are lost in your thoughts all alone.”
She mentioned that he uttered these words while holding a piece of paper that documented the board’s decision on February 2 to reduce his corruption jail term from 12 years to six.
Najib’s release date is now set for August 23, 2028, on the condition that he pays a fine of RM50 million (approximately S$14 million), which was reduced from RM210 million.
Umno, Najib’s political party, stated on February 3 that it respects the decision of the Pardons Board but will continue its fight until Najib is freed from prison.
Ms. Nooryana, who is also a committee member of Umno’s women’s wing, revealed that her father had been optimistic about the outcome of the Pardons Board’s decision five days before it was announced. She mentioned that those around Najib had encouraged him to be patient, assuring him that “it won’t be long.” The disappointment felt by Najib may stem from not receiving a full pardon and the prospect of spending the next four to five years behind bars.
“In his eyes, I saw weariness. Perhaps Daddy lacks sleep, contemplating the decision that was made yesterday,” she added in her Instagram post.
