4-7-2023 (YANGON) Myanmar has exported a total of 132,938 tons of black grams in the first three months of the 2023-24 fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Commerce’s report on Monday. The country earned more than $111.03 million from these exports between April 1 and June 23 this year.
Black grams are grown in Myanmar during the winter season and are harvested between March and April. Myanmar produces more than 500,000 tons of black grams annually, with 85 percent of the total production exported to countries such as India, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan, and the Philippines.
The Ministry of Commerce’s figures also revealed that Myanmar’s total exports of beans and pulses, including black grams, reached over 394,891 tons during the same period.
In the previous fiscal year 2022-23, Myanmar exported over 1.91 million tons of beans and pulses, including more than 649,940 tons of black grams. Beans and pulses are the country’s second-most cultivated crops after rice, accounting for 33 percent of the country’s total agricultural production.
This year’s export figures show a promising start for Myanmar’s agricultural sector despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation has implemented various measures to boost agricultural production, including providing farmers with better seeds, fertilizers, and technical assistance.
Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce is optimistic that the country’s black gram exports will continue to grow in the coming months, contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth.
