4-1-2024 (YANGON) Myanmar’s State Administration Council has issued orders to pardon a total of over 9,000 prisoners on Thursday, in commemoration of the country’s 76th anniversary of Independence Day.
According to the council’s directives, 9,652 prisoners from Myanmar and 114 from other countries have had their sentences remitted for the sake of peace and on humanitarian grounds.
This marks an increase compared to the previous year when 7,012 prisoners were granted amnesty on the occasion of the country’s 75th anniversary of Independence Day.
Furthermore, on August 1, 2023, more than 7,000 prisoners were also pardoned in observance of Dhammacakka Day, a significant Buddhist event that takes place on the full moon of the second Waso lunar month in the Myanmar calendar.
