13-8-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The blaze that erupted on the MV KMTC Shenzhen container ship near Pantai Acheh, Port Klang on Saturday evening has been successfully subdued by the rescue teams. The Selangor Fire and Rescue department, along with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), swiftly responded to the distress call and managed to bring the fire under control within two hours of their arrival.
According to Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail, the director of the Selangor Fire and Rescue department, their team reached the scene at 1:38 am on Sunday. With the coordinated efforts of various departments, including the MMEA, the fire was contained by 3:33 am. However, the firemen discovered two containers on the ship that were still emitting smoke when they entered the location at 7:20 am. These containers contained general goods and resins, with one of them experiencing a leak.
The fire department is currently focused on extinguishing the remaining embers through a direct attack. They are meticulously inspecting the containers and addressing any leaks that they come across. The safety of the crew members was ensured, and all of them were successfully rescued.
Water cannons from two tugboats, provided by Westport and Northport, were employed as an initial measure to bring the fire under control. Additionally, an MMEA ship that was operating nearby swiftly reached the scene, while another boat from the Maritime Department and a team of firemen were also dispatched to assist in the operation.
