19-12-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A rare Musang King durian from the renowned Raub district in Pahang has recently set a new benchmark in the durian market, fetching an astounding RM185,000 (S$52,500). This remarkable sale has positioned it among the most expensive durians globally.
The auction for this prized durian variety commenced on December 17 during a fundraising event, with an initial bid of RM2,000. However, the bidding quickly escalated as multiple participants vied for the highly sought-after fruit.
According to reports from Sinar Harian, the bids steadily climbed until they reached an extraordinary RM185,000, ultimately secured by Mr. Huang Qi Wen, the winning bidder.
During the same event, a Black Thorn durian garnered the second-highest bid, amounting to RM15,000.
Mr. Fadzli Mohamad Kamal, the Chairman of the Pahang Committee for Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports, and Non-Governmental Organizations, expressed that the proceeds from the auction would be donated to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Ruan, a local school in Raub, to enhance its infrastructure.
“(Pahang Durian Traders Association Chairman, Lye Wee Ken) made a significant contribution of RM204,444 through the bidding program, held at SMK Sungai Ruan in Raub,” Mr. Fadzli stated.
He further added, “In total, RM404,444 was successfully raised through the auction of the Musang King and Black Thorn durians.”
The exceptional sale of this Musang King durian has not only captured attention due to its exorbitant price but also underlines the enduring allure and prestige associated with the revered fruit in Malaysian culture.
