11-7-2024 (HANOI) A devastating multi-vehicle collision on the Hanoi-Hai Phong highway has claimed the lives of two drivers and left six others injured. The accident occurred when a 7-seater car slammed into the back of two vehicles that had pulled over to handle an earlier crash, resulting in a tragic pile-up.
According to reports from the Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway Management and Operation Company Limited, the chain of events unfolded around 9:00 a.m. on July 11. A 9-seat car, converted from a larger 16-seat vehicle, was traveling from Hanoi to Hai Phong when it collided with the rear of a pickup truck near Gia Loc town. Both vehicles were forced to come to a halt in the 120 km/h lane, close to the median strip.
As the two drivers exited their vehicles to assess the situation, a 7-seater car suddenly plowed into them from behind. The impact sent the 7-seater careening into the side of the 9-seater car before spinning across the road, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The horrific collision claimed the lives of driver Quach Van Lam and passenger Trinh Tuan Anh, who succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Six other individuals sustained various injuries and were rushed to Hai Duong General Hospital for immediate medical attention.
At the accident site, the 9-seat car’s rear door had been torn off, and its right side was crushed. The 7-seater car suffered extensive front-end damage, with its airbag deployed and the vehicle coming to rest sideways across both lanes of the highway. The pickup truck also sustained significant rear-end damage.
The tragic incident caused partial congestion on the Hanoi-bound side of the expressway as authorities worked to divert traffic and investigate the cause of the accident. Eyewitnesses reported that the road surface was dry, and all signs and guardrails were in place at the time of the collision.
The Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway, spanning 105 km and passing through Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Hai Phong provinces, is a vital transportation artery for the region. With a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h and a minimum of 60 km/h, the six-lane highway is designed to accommodate high traffic volumes while prioritizing safety.
