12-7-2023 (BANGKOK) With the crucial vote for Thailand’s next Prime Minister looming, Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat has appealed to lawmakers to help restore democratic norms by backing a majority government in line with the people’s will.
In a video address posted on Facebook Tuesday, Pita reminded parliamentarians that Move Forward won the most seats at the May election, capturing 14.44 million votes and 151 MPs. He said this clear expression of the people’s voice called for meaningful change in Thailand.
Having cobbled together a 7-party coalition representing 72% of votes cast, Pita argued a Move Forward-led government would be the legitimate choice under normal circumstances. However, the election was two months ago and only now is the PM vote taking place due to provisions in the 2017 constitution designed to empower coup-makers.
The charter controversially gives senators equal say to MPs in picking the PM for the first five years. While the Move Forward coalition has 312 MPs, it requires another 64 votes which could come from either senators or MPs outside the bloc.
Pita said Thursday’s vote offers a chance to override the “abnormal” political situation and deliver a majority government that can respond to the people’s demands. This would set Thailand on a path towards a functioning parliamentary democracy trusted by its citizens.
He stressed the vote is not about him or Move Forward specifically, but rather affirming the election result and principles of democratic representation. Pita pledged to be a PM for all, regardless of ideology or voting preference, if given the chance to lead a majority government.
The appeal comes amidst rumours the Election Commission may file a case over Pita’s media shareholdings before Thursday’s vote. If enacted, he could be suspended as an MP – potentially influencing senators to block his candidacy.
But Pita remains determined to persuade parliamentarians to take Thailand in a more positive democratic direction – if the people’s will is respected.
