15-11-2023 (BANGKOK) A mother’s love for her child is supposed to be one of the strongest bonds we know of. Thus, it comes as shocking news that a mother in Thailand allegedly hired a gunman to murder her own son.
On November 9th, 31-year-old Weeraphan Phothong was shot dead in his house by a hitman. Two days later, on November 11th, his mother, Kaew Phothong, turned herself in to the police and confessed to being involved in hiring the killer for 25,000 baht (approximately S$949).
According to Kaew, her son was a drug addict who repeatedly physically abused her despite her attempts to escape the situation.
The Thai police received a report of Weeraphan’s death at 9 am on November 9th. When they arrived at his residence, they found him shot dead. Kaew, aged 57, initially claimed she was unaware of the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.
However, on November 11th, Kaew surrendered herself to the police and revealed that her son had physically assaulted her multiple times due to his drug addiction. In search of a solution, she sought help from her older brother, Sarn, who allegedly hired a 64-year-old gunman named Somsa Saenchaiwut for 25,000 baht to carry out the murder. Eventually, the three individuals involved in the crime decided to turn themselves in, feeling guilty for their actions.
Remarkably, Weeraphan’s ex-wife, Jaruphat Singchum, also claimed that she divorced him due to physical abuse. She supported Kaew’s story and stated that Weeraphan would frequently demand money from his mother. Jaruphat personally witnessed Weeraphan attacking Kaew and even causing serious injuries that required stitches on her chin, according to Thai Rath.
While expressing sadness over Weeraphan’s death, Jaruphat understood Kaew’s actions in response to the persistent abuse.
The case has shocked the community, highlighting the tragic consequences of domestic violence and drug addiction. The Thai authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice is served.
