16-1-2024 (BANGKOK) A young Penang couple who vanished during their Thailand travels last September has safely returned home, with authorities ruling out human trafficking concerns.
Wu Mingsong, 21, and Wu Yingying, 23, who sparked widespread concern after their unexpected disappearance whilst travelling to Bangkok, have reunited with their families in Penang. The couple’s whereabouts had remained unknown for four months, prompting intense speculation and police investigations.
Northeast District Deputy Police Chief Lee Rui Shi confirmed their return and stated that the investigation has been formally concluded. “We have taken statements from both individuals, and I can definitively say that this case bears no connection to human trafficking,” Lee told reporters.
Speaking exclusively to local media, Wu’s mother, Chen Lili, expressed profound relief at her son’s return. “He’s currently staying at his girlfriend’s residence and appears to be in good health, with no signs of physical harm,” she said. According to Chen, her son offered only brief details about their ordeal, mentioning an arrest by local authorities during an attempted transit from Thailand to Germany.
“My son has always been rather reserved,” Chen explained. “While he hasn’t shared many details about their experience, what matters most is their safe return.” She extended heartfelt gratitude to all parties involved in the search efforts, noting how the community’s support “demonstrated genuine human kindness during this challenging period.”
The couple’s disappearance initially raised concerns when Wu Yingying departed for Bangkok with Wu Mingsong in early September, allegedly without informing family members, taking along her passport, identification documents, and personal belongings.
