2-1-2024 (MANILA) A Filipina domestic worker who had been reported missing for approximately two months was discovered deceased in Kuwait, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Thursday.
The overseas Filipino worker (OFW), who had been employed in Kuwait for five years, was last in contact with her family in October, according to DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac. Her employer had reported that she had left her workplace during the same period.
The victim’s remains were discovered in an advanced state of decomposition on 31 December within the residence of a Kuwaiti national. The discovery came after the alleged perpetrator was handed over to authorities by his own brother, according to multiple news sources.
Speaking to local media, Secretary Cacdac stated that crucial details, including the precise timing of her death and the suspect’s connection to the victim, remain under investigation. “A primary suspect is currently in custody, though their relationship to the deceased is yet to be fully established,” he said.
The DMW has confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, with a designated lawyer coordinating closely with Kuwaiti prosecutors to pursue justice. “We are working diligently with Kuwait’s judicial system to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution,” Cacdac added.
This incident adds to a concerning pattern of violence against Filipino workers in Kuwait. Notable cases include the tragic death of Jullebee Ranara, who was found burned in the desert, and Joanna Demafelis, whose remains were discovered in a freezer.
