14-8-2023 (JAKARTA) The Miss Universe Organization has taken a decisive step by severing ties with its Indonesian franchise, PT Capella Swastika Karya, following a wave of allegations involving sexual harassment. The organization’s announcement comes in the wake of disturbing reports of misconduct that have cast a shadow over the beauty pageant industry.
The controversy erupted when numerous women came forward with allegations of sexual harassment during the Miss Universe Indonesia competition. More than half a dozen contestants claimed that all 30 finalists were subjected to an invasive body check, involving disrobing, just two days before the crowning ceremony held in Jakarta.
Of particular concern was the revelation that five of the women had their photographs taken during this distressing episode. These actions have prompted an investigation by Jakarta police spokesperson Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, who is determined to uncover the truth behind the allegations.
The Miss Universe Organization, headquartered in the US, made a decisive move in response to the scandal. In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the organization expressed its strong condemnation of the events that transpired in the Miss Universe Indonesia competition. It cited a failure to uphold brand standards, ethics, and expectations as the reason for cutting ties with the Indonesian franchise.
The organization clarified that it had terminated its relationship with PT Capella Swastika Karya and its National Director, Poppy Capella. The statement acknowledged the bravery of the contestants who had come forward and emphasized that providing a safe environment for women was the organization’s top priority.
Addressing the accusations, Poppy Capella, the Indonesia franchise director, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram vehemently denying any involvement in the alleged body checks. She emphasized her stance against violence and sexual harassment and disassociated herself from any actions that would contravene these values.
Furthermore, the controversy surrounding the Miss Universe Indonesia competition extended to changes in competition guidelines. The pageant was criticized for eliminating the minimum height requirement after crowning a winner, raising questions about transparency and fairness.
In response, the Miss Universe Organization clarified its global stance on inclusivity. It stated that height, weight, and body dimensions were not prerequisites for participation in a Miss Universe pageant anywhere in the world. This declaration aimed to underscore the organization’s commitment to fairness and equal opportunity.
