6-3-2024 (BANGKOK) In a remarkable midair incident, a VietJet pilot found himself thrust into an unexpected role as a makeshift midwife when a passenger went into labour during a flight from Taipei to Bangkok. Jakarin Sararnrakskul, a seasoned aviator with 18 years of experience, was alerted by cabin crew of the emergency unfolding on board, prompting him to swiftly spring into action.
The heart-stopping drama unfolded as the expectant mother retreated to the plane’s lavatory, gripped by the intense throes of labour. Jakarin, exhibiting remarkable composure and quick thinking, rushed to her aid, ultimately delivering the newborn safely amid the confines of the aircraft.
In a touching Instagram post, the father-of-one shared an image of himself cradling the precious “Sky Baby,” as the crew affectionately nicknamed the infant. “I have been a pilot for 18 years. I just helped a newborn baby on the plane,” he wrote, capturing the extraordinary nature of the experience.
While inflight births are undoubtedly rare occurrences, they are not entirely unprecedented. A 2020 study published by the International Society of Travel Medicine revealed that between 1929 and 2018, a total of 74 children were born on commercial flights, with an impressive survival rate of 97%.
