30-99-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Ministry of Health (MOH) is maintaining a state of high alert in anticipation of the potential emergence of “Disease X” in the country, according to Deputy Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni.
Lukanisman stated that the preparations were being made based on the experiences gained from managing the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as previous encounters with infections such as the nipah virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), even though the specific disease has not yet been identified.
The MOH remains committed to monitoring developments both domestically and internationally, ensuring that the country’s health system is fortified to confront any possible scenario.
“People should not be unduly concerned because information regarding any disease outbreak or virus will be promptly disseminated to the public,” Lukanisman assured during the Lotus’s Ceria Charity Run event held in conjunction with the Wellness Month celebration in Setia Alam today.
Regarding the Wellness Month campaign, observed annually in September, Lukanisman highlighted that it represents one of the ministry’s initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians.
He further emphasized that the program serves as a platform to enhance collaboration among key stakeholders, particularly those from the private sector, aligning with one of the policies outlined in the Health White Paper presented in Parliament last June.
