26-8-2023 (JAKARTA) Yasonna Laoly, Indonesia’s Minister of Law and Human Rights, is delving into deeper cooperation with the Dutch government to combat the escalating threat posed by transnational crimes.
Addressing the issue, Minister Laoly emphasized the need for both governments to harness technology in the fight against transnational crimes. He stated, “The governments must utilize technology to fight transnational crimes effectively. Hence, Indonesia and the Netherlands encourage cooperation in digital technology and social media platforms.”
Laoly pointed out that as technology advances, transnational crimes have also increased in complexity and scale. To effectively counter these evolving threats, he underscored the importance of building bilateral cooperation in the field of digital technology.
On a recent Friday, Minister Laoly held a significant meeting with Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, Dilan Yeilgöz-Zegerius. The meeting was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Mayerfas, and the ministry’s secretary general, Andap Budhi Revianto.
During the meeting, Minister Laoly expressed his desire for Indonesia and the Netherlands to enhance cooperation in law enforcement and border surveillance. He highlighted the diverse forms of transnational crimes that harm societies, including human trafficking and cyber fraud.
Elaborating on the issue, Laoly explained, “Transnational crime perpetrators can post fake job vacancies abroad, and the victims are forced to stay and cannot go home. The governments of Indonesia and the Netherlands need to increase cooperation to fight these crimes.”
Indonesia has taken several measures to combat transnational crimes, including establishing a database to monitor the mobility of survivors who have been repatriated and tightening immigration checks. Additionally, Indonesia has entered into mutual legal assistance treaties, extradition agreements, and legal cooperation with various countries to address transnational crimes.
Minister Laoly believes that collaborating with the Netherlands will bolster security measures and enhance the government’s ability to protect its citizens from the scourge of transnational crimes.
Indonesia and the Netherlands maintain an ongoing dialogue through the Indonesia – Netherlands Legal Update (INLU) forum, where they exchange insights, experiences, and best practices in the realm of law enforcement.
