20-8-2023 (ISLAMABAD) Tragedy struck in Northwestern Pakistan as eleven laborers lost their lives in a horrific militant attack, according to caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, who conveyed the grim news on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Security and police officials in the northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province reported that a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, causing devastation to a truck transporting the workers to a construction project in Waziristan, situated near the Afghan border.
Deputy Commissioner of North Waziristan, Rehan Khattak, provided details of the incident, stating, “They were working at an army post that is under construction… an IED exploded under a vehicle carrying the laborers.”
As of now, no group has claimed immediate responsibility for this devastating blast.
Pakistan has experienced a resurgence of attacks by Islamist militants since last year when a ceasefire between the Pakistani Taliban, known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the government broke down. Additionally, other extremist groups, including the Islamic State, have claimed responsibility for several attacks. This includes a significant explosion at a political rally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, hosted by a religious group last month, which resulted in the tragic loss of 45 lives.
