8-5-2024 (LOS ANGELES) Michelle Yeoh, the Oscar-winning actress known for her dynamic performances, has secured a pivotal role in “Blade Runner 2099,” a highly anticipated limited series set to premiere on Prime Video. The show serves as a follow-up to the 2017 cinematic sequel, “Blade Runner 2049.”
While details regarding Yeoh’s character and the series’ plot remain tightly under wraps, her involvement signifies another significant expansion of the sci-fi franchise rooted in Philip K. Dick’s influential novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” The franchise originally took flight with Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 film, “Blade Runner.” Production for the series commenced abroad after a nearly year-long delay attributed to the tumultuous events of 2023. Originally slated to film in Belfast, the production eventually shifted its base to Prague following the work hiatus.
Silka Luisa spearheads the series as showrunner while also serving as an executive producer alongside Ridley Scott, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan van Tulleken, known for his work on “Shōgun,” directs the first two episodes and holds an executive producer credit. Steven Johnson assumes the role of co-executive producer. The production company overseeing operations in Prague is Film United.
Yeoh’s illustrious career has seen her rise to prominence through her roles in Hong Kong action films during the 1990s. Her recent accomplishments include winning the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Beyond her Academy Award-winning role, Yeoh has graced screens in various acclaimed productions, including Netflix’s “The Brothers Sun,” “The Witcher: Blood Origins,” and “A Haunting in Venice.”
Recognized with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, Yeoh is set to feature in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” and reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou in Alex Kurtzman’s “Star Trek: Section 31.” Additionally, she is slated to appear in James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels. Yeoh is represented by David Unger at Artist International Group.
