14-10-2023 (LONDON) Legendary British actor and two-time Oscar winner, Michael Caine, has announced his retirement from acting at the age of 90, following the release of his latest film.
In an interview with BBC radio on Saturday, Caine confirmed his decision, stating, “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now.” Reflecting on his illustrious career, he expressed, “I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will beat this?”
Caine’s final film, “The Great Escaper,” features him alongside the late Glenda Jackson, who passed away in June after completing her role in the movie. Inspired by a true story, the film portrays a World War Two veteran who escapes from a care home to attend D-Day anniversary celebrations in France.
Considering the roles he would likely be offered at his age, Caine remarked, “The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85. So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.”
Throughout his remarkable career, Caine garnered critical acclaim and achieved numerous accolades. He won Oscars for his performances in the 1986 film “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Cider House Rules” in 1999, both in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Caine’s notable contributions to the film industry include memorable roles in movies such as “Alfie,” “Get Carter,” and “Educating Rita.”
