5-7-2023 (MEXICO CITY) In a peculiar ceremony, Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of a Mexican town, tied the knot with a female Morelet’s crocodile named Alicia Adriana. Local tradition refers to these creatures as “princesses,” and Victor declared that they were “in love” with each other. “I will take responsibility because we love each other. That’s what matters. Without love, there can be no marriage… I yield to the princess and marry her,” he proclaimed.
Following the oath, Victor planted a kiss on Alicia’s head.
However, this union between a man and a female crocodile is not as uncommon as it seems. Such marriages have been taking place for 230 years to commemorate the peace between the Chontal and Huave indigenous communities.
Para cumplir con una de las costumbres más arraigadas en el pueblo de San Pedro Huamelula #Oaxaca, el alcalde de la localidad, Víctor Hugo Sosa, aceptó casarse con una lagarta viva y la ceremonia fue este viernes.

The mayor represents the Chontal king, while Alicia symbolizes the Huave princess, and their marriage signifies the coming together and alliance of the two communities. Prior to the ceremony, Alicia was paraded from house to house, allowing locals to dance while holding her.
Alicia made her grand entrance wearing a green dress, a colorful handmade embroidered bodice, and ribbons and glittering headgear, looking “beautiful.” Her snout was tied up, ensuring no pre-wedding mishaps.
For the formal wedding, she donned a white bridal outfit and was escorted to the local town hall.
After the ceremony, the mayor danced with the bride to the sound of traditional music, expressing his joy, “We are happy because we celebrate the union of two cultures. People are satisfied.”
