22-8-2023 (SAN FRANCISCO) Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced on Tuesday the launch of the web version of its text-first social media platform, Threads. This move is aimed at retaining professional users and gaining an edge over its rival, X (formerly known as Twitter).
Threads users will now have the option to access the microblogging platform by logging in through its website on their computers, according to Meta. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, mentioned in a Threads post that the web version will be rolled out to users “over the next few days.”
This highly anticipated launch could help Threads gain broader acceptance among power users such as brands, company accounts, advertisers, and journalists. They will now have the advantage of utilizing the platform on a larger screen, enhancing their experience and productivity.
Upon its initial release on July 5, Threads garnered significant attention, accumulating over 100 million sign-ups within just five days. However, its popularity declined as users returned to the more familiar X platform after the initial rush. According to a report by analytics platform Similarweb dated August 10, the number of daily active users on the Android version of the Threads app dropped from its peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million in just over a month.
Meta has acknowledged the need to enhance the web experience and plans to add more functionality to Threads in the coming weeks.
