22-11-2023 (BANGKOK) In a concerning incident on Wednesday morning, police apprehended a mentally-ill man who entered Ban Namphu Hinlard School in Khon San district, wielding a large knife. The intrusion occurred at approximately 8 am during the school’s morning assembly, resulting in a minor injury to a teacher.
The primary school, catering to kindergarteners and grades 1-6, found itself at the center of the incident when the man, residing in a house opposite the school, drove recklessly onto the premises on a motorcycle. Approximately 100 children and their teachers were assembling for the morning session when the intruder brandished a big knife.
Amid the chaos, the man inflicted a slight injury on a teacher. Responding swiftly, school staff ushered children into the main building for safety. Subsequently, the assailant fled the school on his motorcycle and sought refuge in his residence across the road.
Law enforcement officers engaged in a dialogue with the disturbed individual for over an hour, working to de-escalate the situation before effecting his arrest. Described as mentally ill by both police and school officials, the arrested man was later transported to Khon San Hospital for assessment and care. Authorities have withheld his identity.
