25-10-2024 (SIGNAPORE) McDonald’s Singapore has moved to reassure customers that its operations remain unaffected by the recent E. coli outbreak linked to onion supplies in the United States, which has resulted in one fatality and 49 reported illnesses.
The fast-food giant confirmed that its Singapore outlets source onions exclusively from Malaysian and Singaporean suppliers, maintaining complete separation from the US supply chain affected by the outbreak.
“Our Singapore operations remain entirely unaffected by this situation,” a McDonald’s spokesperson stated, emphasising the company’s commitment to food safety and local sourcing practices.
The US outbreak, initially connected to Quarter Pounder hamburgers, has prompted a significant recall of sliced onions from supplier Taylor Farms. The incident has rippled through America’s fast-food industry, with Burger King, KFC, and Pizza Hut also recalling products from the same supplier.
US health authorities, including the Department of Agriculture, have identified fresh onions as the likely source of contamination, though investigations continue into possible beef patty involvement. While proper cooking eliminates E. coli in beef products, the presence of raw onions in Quarter Pounders has raised additional concerns.
The US Food and Drug Administration confirmed Taylor Farms as the supplier to affected McDonald’s locations, leading to a voluntary recall while investigations continue to definitively establish the outbreak’s source.
