14-10-2024 (HONG KONG) A fierce fire erupted at the New Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area on Hoi Fai Road this afternoon, sending plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky and prompting a large-scale emergency response from local authorities.
The inferno, which began around 5 pm, is believed to have originated from burning pallets in the bustling cargo area. Eyewitnesses reported seeing intense flames and dense smoke, leading to a flurry of concerned calls to emergency services.
The Hong Kong Fire Services Department responded with alacrity, dispatching multiple units to tackle the blaze. In a coordinated effort to combat the fire from all angles, two fireboats were also deployed, attacking the flames from the waterfront.
As the situation escalated, the fire spread to a nearby barge by 6 pm, compelling fire officials to upgrade the incident to a No. 3 alarm fire emergency. This classification, indicating a serious threat, necessitated the mobilisation of additional firefighters and resources to the scene.

A spokesperson for the Fire Services Department stated, “Our teams are currently engaged in an intensive operation to contain and extinguish the fire. We are utilising all available resources to prevent further spread and minimise damage to surrounding areas.”
Local residents have been advised to take precautionary measures due to the heavy smoke. “We urge people in the vicinity to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid smoke inhalation and reduce exposure to potentially harmful fumes,” the spokesperson added.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, with investigators poised to begin their enquiries once the blaze is brought under control.
