22-5-2023 (Manila) In the early hours of Monday, a devastating fire broke out at the Manila Central Post Office located in Liwasang Bonifacio, sending flames soaring and requiring a massive response from 80 firetrucks.
The iconic building, recognized as a national historical landmark, quickly became engulfed in the blaze, prompting the activation of the General Alarm to tackle the inferno. Prior to that, at 1:09 a.m., the Manila Public Information Office had raised the Second Alarm, signaling the severity of the situation.
The Manila Central Post Office serves as the headquarters for the Philippine Postal Corporation, a government-owned and controlled entity. It also houses the primary mail sorting and distribution operations for the entire country, making it a crucial facility for postal services.
Designed by renowned Filipino architects Juan Arellano and Tomás Mapúa, construction of the neoclassical building commenced in 1926. Despite enduring significant damage during the Battle of Manila in World War II, the post office was diligently rebuilt in 1946, restoring its grandeur and historical significance.
