27-12-2023 (NEW YORK) After seven years together, Mariah Carey and Bryan Tanaka have called it quits, as confirmed by the dancer in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 26). Tanaka, who transitioned from Carey’s backup dancer to her creative director and partner, shared the details of their amicable breakup in a statement released to The Associated Press and posted on his Instagram.
“In a blend of emotions, I share this personal update about my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” he conveyed. “Our decision to pursue different paths is mutual, and as we navigate these separate journeys, we do so with profound respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we’ve shared. The memories we’ve created and the artistic collaborations are etched in my heart forever.”
“I eagerly anticipate continuing my journey, knowing my passion for inspiration, dance, and the creative arts will resonate in the unfolding chapters,” he continued.
Tanaka and Carey’s connection dates back to 2006 when Tanaka joined her on the backup dancer roster for The Adventures of Mimi tour.
The All I Want For Christmas Is You singer officially confirmed their relationship to the AP in 2017, adopting a guarded stance on her personal life. “I’m just going to be like ‘I really don’t talk about my personal life.’ Because that’s what I used to do and it really worked for a minute, back, a while ago,” she stated at the time, with a smile. “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about my personal life. … Me and my boyfriend don’t want to do that.”
Speculations about their separation began circulating online last month, sparked by Tanaka’s absence from Carey’s Merry Christmas One and All! tour.
As of now, Carey has not issued a public statement regarding the breakup.
