23-12-2024 (SINGAPORE) A 27-year-old former boyfriend has been sentenced to 14 weeks in prison after secretly recording intimate videos of his ex-girlfriend and threatening to distribute them to her social circle, in a case that highlights growing concerns about technology-facilitated abuse.
Aaryan Raina Gobinath was found guilty of creating unauthorised intimate recordings and making criminal threats. The court also considered an additional charge related to making intimate recordings without consent during sentencing.
The prosecution revealed that Gobinath, who maintained a friendship with the victim after their romantic relationship ended, secretly recorded two intimate videos during video calls in October 2022 using screen recording technology. He proceeded to make two additional recordings during in-person encounters in October and November 2022, with only one having the victim’s knowledge and consent.
The situation escalated following a heated argument on 19 November 2022, when Gobinath threatened via text message to share an intimate video with the victim’s friend. The relationship further deteriorated during a video call on 14 December 2022, when Gobinath became incensed after the victim told him he was “dead to her”, according to Deputy Public Prosecutor Gabriel Lee.
The victim’s identity remains protected under a court-mandated gag order.
