19-10-2023 (SYDNEY) Mick Moloney found himself wrestling with a wild kangaroo to rescue his pet dog in Mildura, Australia. The incident, captured on TikTok, showcased Moloney’s determination to save his dog from the kangaroo’s grip.
The video, which initially garnered millions of views, was later taken down but re-uploaded in a condensed version a few days later. In the footage, Moloney ventured into the Murray River, where he discovered a kangaroo tightly holding his dog, Hatchi, in what seemed like a headlock.
Moloney recounted that he had been relaxing on the riverbank when he noticed that Hatchi, one of his three Akitas, had vanished. Upon scanning the river, he came face-to-face with a kangaroo, its arms submerged in the water, and his dog struggling in its grasp.
According to Moloney, his dog emerged from the water gasping for breath, water streaming from its mouth, and let out a distressing yelp. Initially, Moloney attempted to scare away the kangaroo with loud noises, but his efforts proved futile. Faced with no other option, he made the courageous decision to confront the muscular creature, which he described as resembling someone “who just got out of jail.”
In the video, Moloney can be heard threatening the kangaroo, exclaiming, “I’m going to punch your f***ing head in.” When the kangaroo remained unresponsive, he demanded, “Let go of my dog,” and swung at the marsupial. In a swift retaliation, the kangaroo knocked Moloney’s phone into the river, initiating a brief scuffle that was not captured on camera.
Upon retrieving his phone, the video revealed that the kangaroo had moved away from the dog. As Moloney made his way to safety, the kangaroo even attempted to attack him again. Undeterred, Moloney splashed water at the creature and chuckled before reuniting with his dog on the shore.
In the full-length original video shared on People, Moloney engaged in a conversation with his dogs after the encounter. He playfully challenged Hatchi, saying, “Not feeling so tough now, are you, dude?” He also questioned his other two dogs, “Where were you to save him? And you?” Displaying his bloodied hand to the camera, he added, “Look, I got frickin’ mauled.”
Thankfully, Moloney’s dog emerged from the incident unharmed. He expressed relief, stating, “I got my dog back, that’s the main thing.” TikTok commenters expressed concern for the dog’s well-being.
Moloney assured ABC that his dog was doing well and that the incident had not deterred him from using the same walking track along the riverbank when he takes his dogs for a walk. He emphasized that he holds no ill will towards animals and had no intention of being cruel.
Known for his expertise in mixed martial arts and Brazilian jujitsu, Moloney received messages inquiring whether he would incorporate “roo-jitsu” into his martial arts curriculum. However, he responded with a light-hearted remark, stating, “Let’s just call it a draw.”
