30-8-2024 (SINGAPORE) In an unusual incident that has left local residents stunned, a 62-year-old man found himself in hot water – quite literally – after his vehicle took an impromptu dip in a swimming pool at the prestigious Seletar Country Club. The event, which occurred on the evening of 27th August, has resulted in the driver’s arrest on suspicion of drink driving.
Authorities were alerted to the peculiar scene at 101 Seletar Club Road at approximately 10:05 pm. Eyewitnesses were treated to the surreal sight of a dark-coloured car submerged in the club’s pool, its rear end protruding skyward while its headlights continued to illuminate the waters below.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, captures the bizarre tableau in all its glory. The footage, shared on the popular Facebook page Roads.sg, shows the vehicle’s precarious position, serving as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving.
Despite the dramatic nature of the accident, the driver miraculously escaped with only minor injuries. In a twist that has raised eyebrows, he declined medical attention and refused transportation to a hospital.
As investigations into the incident continue, local authorities have yet to release further details. The Seletar Country Club, known for its pristine grounds and exclusive membership, has not commented on the incident at the time of reporting.
This unusual event comes against a backdrop of concerning trends in drink-driving statistics across Singapore. According to recent police data, the first half of 2024 saw a slight uptick in drink-driving accidents, with 96 cases reported compared to 88 in the same period of 2023. However, it’s worth noting that overall drink-driving arrests have seen a marginal decrease, dropping from 853 to 812 year-on-year.
Of particular concern is the rise in fatal accidents linked to drink-driving. The figures paint a sobering picture, with such incidents increasing from three cases in the first half of 2022 to eight in 2023, and further climbing to nine in the corresponding period of 2024.
