9-7-2024 (BANGKOK) A chilling tale of premeditated murder and robbery has unfolded in the normally tranquil city of Chiang Mai, leaving residents and authorities stunned. A 26-year-old man, identified as Nipitpon Somboonsukying, has confessed to a meticulously planned crime spree that culminated in the murder of a ride-hailing driver and a brazen gold shop robbery.
Investigators at Bhubingrajanivej Police Station revealed that Somboonsukying had been plotting this elaborate scheme for an astonishing nine months. The suspect was apprehended on Monday evening at his residence in Doi Saket district, where law enforcement officers recovered gold ornaments valued at approximately 3 million baht, along with a firearm and clothing allegedly worn during the commission of the crimes.
The grim discovery of the victim’s body, identified as 48-year-old Lt Suthep Chainanta, was made behind a roadside pavilion near Wang Bua Ban Waterfall on Doi Suthep’s slopes. Forensic teams have transferred the remains to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
Police Region 5 Chief, Krittapol Yisakorn, provided a detailed account of the events that unfolded in the early hours of Monday. “The suspect parked his vehicle at a Doi Suthep restaurant before embarking on a two-kilometre trek along a nature trail. He then summoned the victim’s taxi service,” Yisakorn explained. “Upon the driver’s arrival, Somboonsukying fatally shot him, commandeered the vehicle, and disposed of the body over a nearby cliff.”
In a shocking escalation, Somboonsukying then drove the stolen taxi to a shopping centre in Chiang Mai city, where he executed a daring heist at a gold shop, absconding with 80 baht weight of gold ornaments.
The suspect’s attempt to profit from his ill-gotten gains was partially thwarted when three gold shop proprietors, recognising the distinctive logo on the stolen items from news reports, refused to purchase them. However, two shops in outlying districts unknowingly bought a portion of the stolen gold.
Authorities have stated that Somboonsukying, who acted alone, cited financial hardship as the motivation behind his crimes. Investigators noted a disturbing connection between the suspect’s fondness for video games and the intricately planned nature of his offences.
“This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in our community,” said Detective Inspector Chaiwat Thongchai. “The level of premeditation involved is truly alarming. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.”
Local resident Somchai Wattana expressed shock at the incident: “Chiang Mai has always been a peaceful city. This horrific crime has shaken our sense of security. We hope justice will be served swiftly.”
