15-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) A 23-year-old man, Cheng Yuan Kang, faced charges on Monday (Jan 15) for sending a false bomb threat to the Singapore Motorshow’s Instagram account while the event was in progress.
Cheng was presented with one count of communicating false information of a harmful thing in the State Courts.
According to the charge, on Saturday around 11:49 am, Cheng was present at the Suntec City Convention Centre when he transmitted the message: “Eurokars is going to be burned down soon by bomb” to the Singapore Motorshow Instagram account.
At that time, the Singapore Motorshow 2024, a significant motoring event attended by motor distributors and dealers, was ongoing at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event was scheduled to run from Jan 11 to Jan 14.
Cheng is alleged to have been aware that his statement was false.
Currently, he has been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for medical examination and is set to appear in court again on Jan 29.
If found guilty of communicating false information of a harmful thing, Cheng could face a fine of up to S$50,000 (US$37,500), imprisonment for up to seven years, or both.
