27-10-2023 (BANGKOK) A malfunction in the hydraulic system of a popular ride at a mobile amusement park in Bangkok led to a serious accident on Thursday night, resulting in injuries to three visitors. The incident occurred on the “giant octopus” ride at the Siam Carnival Funfair, which is located beneath the Rama 8 Bridge in the Bang Phlat district.
The victims, two women aged 24 and 29, along with a 14-year-old girl, suffered bruises and cuts when the ride malfunctioned and crashed to the ground. Prompt medical attention was provided as they were rushed to Chaophraya Hospital for treatment.
The general manager of the amusement park, Somchai Chaidee, explained that the accident was caused by a 50mm iron clasp in one of the ride’s arms cracking, resulting in the seat’s collapse. An inspection revealed that the hydraulic shock absorber in the arm was also damaged.
The “giant octopus” ride comprises five arms radiating from a central pivot, with each arm capable of accommodating up to four seats, each seating two visitors.
Somchai assured that the amusement park would cover all medical expenses for the individuals who sustained injuries. He further stated that the machine, imported from Italy, had a safety mechanism that immediately stops the ride following an accident, preventing other passengers from falling out of their seats.
Notably, this was the first such incident at the amusement park, which ensures that all its machines undergo comprehensive testing before being put into operation.
Following the incident, police investigators conducted an on-site inspection and interviewed the injured individuals at the hospital. All parties involved will be summoned for further questioning as part of the legal proceedings.
The “giant octopus” ride was subsequently removed using a crane. Despite this incident, the other rides at the location are expected to continue operating until October 31, according to the event organizers.
Siam Carnival Funfair, which claims to be the largest mobile amusement park in Thailand, is known for its presence at various locations throughout the city.
