13-9-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) On September 10, Malaysia scored a victory in the ongoing battle for the title of “Best Food in Southeast Asia” when the international food guide TasteAtlas declared its roti canai as “the best bread in the world.” In a surprising twist, Singapore’s roti prata, often considered nearly identical, landed in the 12th position on the list.
Even more unexpected, paratha, the Indian flatbread that served as the inspiration for both roti canai and roti prata, secured the 29th spot on the list. This ranking has ignited passionate debates among global citizens, with people from various countries passionately defending why their nation’s bread should claim the top spot. However, a central question that has dominated these discussions is: “What exactly sets roti canai apart from roti prata?”
The question was raised so frequently that even TasteAtlas intervened, publishing a comprehensive article elucidating the distinctions between the two dishes.
According to TasteAtlas, the key differences lie in their preparation methods and textures. Roti canai is kneaded with ghee, resulting in a soft and elastic dough. When fried, it acquires a crispy exterior and a flaky interior.
Conversely, roti prata is typically made using a blend of flour, water, sugar, and condensed milk, lending it a slightly sweet taste and a denser texture.
Despite the ongoing debate, there is unanimous agreement that both roti canai and roti prata are delectable culinary delights.
