24-5-2023 (Kuala Lumpur) A 22-year-old Malaysian man who claimed to have obtained 9 A+ in SPM has spoken out about the need for improvements to the country’s education system. He emphasized that proficiency in Chinese is also important for students to compete on the international stage. The man, who chose to remain anonymous, shared his thoughts on the Malaysian education system via an Instagram post on Malaysian Pay Gap, a special page for sharing local occupational salary information.
Currently doing an internship in Hong Kong, the man revealed that his salary has reached as high as RM6,937 (HK$12,000). He stated that he did not want to show off his high income, but rather wanted to share his experience of studying abroad and working, which made him realize that there is still much room for improvement in the Malaysian education system.

As an excellent student with A+ in 9 subjects of SPM, he was admitted to the University of Hong Kong and is currently completing a 7-month internship in a famous life insurance company. The man said that the 7-month internship was quite challenging, with various reports to be completed within a very short period of time, and presentations that had to be of a very high standard. “In short, the rhythm of Hong Kong is very tight, and everything must be done immediately,” he added.
The man pointed out that as a Malaysian studying abroad, it is difficult to compete academically with students from China. However,he emphasized that Malaysian students have an advantage due to their proficiency in multiple languages. He believes that the education system in Malaysia needs a lot of improvement, especially in the mathematics section. He suggested that students should be given earlier exposure to statistics and calculus, which are commonly used by engineers, and that more students should be provided with computer science courses in schools.
The man also highlighted the importance of understanding the coronavirus and statistics related to its spread, which should be added to biology lessons. He also suggested that some background knowledge of quantum science should be introduced in the physics subjects of SPM. “These are improvements we can make to the syllabus if we want to move towards high-tech manufacturing,” he said.
