10-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk by the end of this week, as confirmed by Trade Minister Zafrul Aziz.
In addition, Zafrul verified local media reports stating that Tesla will officially launch its operations in Malaysia on July 20. He made these announcements during the soft launch of the International Electric Mobility Showcase 2023, an upcoming event focused on electric vehicles (EVs) set to take place in Kuala Lumpur in October.
Tesla had previously announced its plans to sell electric cars in Malaysia in March, aiming to tap into the increasing demand for EVs in Southeast Asia. The company intends to establish an office, introduce service centers, and develop a network of superchargers in the country. Anwar, as reported by The Star newspaper on Friday, mentioned that he would be meeting with Musk this week to discuss further investments in Malaysia.
According to Zafrul, the upcoming discussion between Anwar and Musk may extend beyond exploring investment opportunities solely in the EV sector.
“It appears that there is potential for collaboration beyond the EV sector,” Zafrul stated.
Furthermore, Malaysia has set its sights on significantly expanding its network of EV chargers within the next two years. Currently, the country has approximately 1,000 chargers, but it aims to aggressively install 10,000 chargers by 2025.
