14-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he had a call with entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk on Friday to discuss Tesla’s investment in Malaysia and Starlink, the satellite communications service operated by Musk’s company, SpaceX.
In a statement, Anwar welcomed the company’s decision to invest in Malaysia and Musk’s willingness to come to the country. Earlier this year, Malaysia approved Tesla’s application to import battery-run electric vehicles (EVs) into the country. The trade ministry announced that Tesla would open offices, showrooms, and service centers in Malaysia and establish a network of charging stations for its cars.
According to Anwar, Tesla’s operations in Malaysia will begin this year. The two discussed the future of Starlink, which Musk started and operates under SpaceX.
Anwar’s statement did not provide further details about the call. However, the call marks the first time the Malaysian Prime Minister has spoken publicly about his conversation with Musk.
The move by Tesla to invest in Malaysia is part of its efforts to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. The region has become a key target for Tesla, as countries in the region seek to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and promote the use of EVs.
In addition to Malaysia, Tesla has also been looking to set up operations in other Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. The company faces competition from other EV makers, including Chinese companies such as BYD and Nio, which have been expanding rapidly in the region.
