12-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Thai police have apprehended a Malaysian Chinese drug lord in Laos, leading Malaysian authorities to dispatch officers to Bangkok to trace the suspect’s assets in Malaysia, valued at approximately 4 billion baht (around RM529.4 million).
According to Thai Assistant Chief of Police, the Malaysian police did not issue a warrant for the suspect, which means there will be no extradition back to Malaysia.
However, Malaysian officers have been sent to Bangkok to obtain statements from the suspect, facilitating an investigation into the suspect’s assets in Malaysia worth 4 billion baht (approximately RM529.4 million). The 41-year-old suspect, surnamed Wang, hails from Parit Buntar, Perak, and was arrested in Laos on December 29 of last year. Reports indicate that Wang has been involved in the drug trade in the “Golden Triangle” area of Thailand and Myanmar for the past 17 years, accumulating tens of millions in illicit proceeds.
After a series of investigations and close collaboration, law enforcement agencies from Thailand, Malaysia, and Laos successfully brought the suspect to justice. He is currently under the custody of Thai police, who have seized assets worth approximately RM11 million.
Thai police have stated that the arrest of the suspect is expected to lead to a significant decline of up to 70% in drug trafficking activities in Thailand.
Earlier, Deputy Chief of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan had received information about the arrest of a Malaysian kingpin by Thai authorities. The Malaysian police will allow the Thai authorities to conduct their investigations and interrogations. Once sufficient evidence is gathered, the arrested individual will face prosecution and charges in Thailand.
