28-7-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia welcomed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Seri Perdana on Sunday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The courtesy call, part of Lavrov’s two-day official visit to Malaysia, provided a platform for wide-ranging discussions on bilateral relations and global issues.
In a social media post following the meeting, Prime Minister Anwar highlighted the focus of their talks, stating, “Our dialogue primarily revolved around Malaysia’s recent application for membership in the BRICS alliance, currently chaired by Russia. This potential alliance presents considerable opportunities for both our nations and underscores our mutual commitment to fostering robust international partnerships.”
The discussions extended beyond the BRICS application, encompassing various avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation. Anwar elaborated, “We explored multiple sectors for enhanced collaboration, with particular emphasis on bolstering ties in crucial areas such as investment and trade, scientific and technological advancements, agricultural development, defence and military cooperation, educational exchanges, tourism promotion, and cultural initiatives.”
The high-level meeting also addressed pressing global concerns, with both leaders engaging in a frank exchange on the ongoing situation in Palestine. “Malaysia and Russia jointly emphasised the critical need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, swift humanitarian aid delivery, and the recognition of Palestine as a full-fledged member of the United Nations,” the Prime Minister revealed.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s stance, emphasising the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts as the cornerstone for achieving a lasting resolution.
The Prime Minister concluded his statement by underscoring the significance of the meeting, noting, “This engagement reflects our shared dedication to addressing global challenges and advancing a cooperative international agenda.”
