23-7-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A Malaysian man was robbed of RM200,000 (approximately S$57,500) after withdrawing cash from a bank, falling victim to a coordinated attack by robbers on motorcycle and car at a traffic light intersection. The shocking incident, captured on a one-minute video circulating on social media, has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted a manhunt by local authorities.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamad Iqbal Ibrahim, the head of the Shah Alam district police, the robbery unfolded when the victim’s car was ambushed by two suspects on a motorcycle and another accomplice in a white Perodua Alza at an intersection near a Tamil primary school in Section 33, Shah Alam.
“In the video, two helmeted men on a motorcycle suddenly stopped on the left side of the victim’s Perodua Kembara car at the traffic light,” Iqbal described. “At the same time, a white Perodua Alza, which had initially been parked behind the victim’s car, suddenly moved forward to block the Kembara’s path.”
The dramatic footage shows one of the suspects from the motorcycle approaching the victim’s car, using an axe to smash the side mirror and seize the car keys, preventing the victim from escaping. Meanwhile, the accomplice in the white Alza snatched a bag containing cash from the front passenger seat of the victim’s car.
“The suspects then fled the scene,” Iqbal added.
The police received a report from the 52-year-old victim on July 22 at 2:41 p.m., stating that he had been robbed at around 1:27 p.m. while returning from the bank with cash withdrawals. The victim, a scrap metal dealer, had withdrawn RM200,000 for business purposes and was alone in the car during the incident, sustaining no injuries.
Iqbal revealed that initial investigations indicated the getaway car used by the suspects had a number plate registered to a Toyota Vios model.
Authorities are currently working tirelessly to track down the suspects and have urged the public to avoid carrying large amounts of cash to prevent such incidents from occurring.
