26-11-2023 (NEW YORK) Ronny Chieng, the Malaysia-born comedian, has garnered widespread praise for his recent guest hosting appearance on the popular satirical American news program, The Daily Show. Fellow Malaysians, such as @benzboleh, expressed their excitement and support, with benzboleh commenting on YouTube, “Ronny rocked it! Awesome!” alongside a Malaysian flag emoji.
Chieng, who is currently based in New York, joined The Daily Show team in 2015 as a correspondent and, four days ago, took on the role of guest host for the first time. In his deadpan style, he introduced himself, stating, “I am Ronny Chieng, and I am guest hosting for one day only. Dreams do come true. I just want to thank the network for believing in me for 23 minutes only.”
On Friday, the 38-year-old actor and stand-up comedian shared his excitement on Facebook, proclaiming, “What a dream to host @thedailyshow! Everything good that has happened to me in America is because of this show.” He also expressed gratitude towards comedian John Oliver, whom he had interviewed on the show, adding, “And thanks to John Oliver for all the advice over the years and for being the best guest interview I could ask for.”
The video footage of Chieng’s guest hosting stint has already accumulated over half a million views, with viewers showering him with praise. One commenter, @nstark1066, even remarked, “If Ronny had only been born in the States, I would support his run for POTUS!” referring to the United States presidency.
Another commentator, Shen Poh, reminisced about Chieng’s earlier days as a performer, saying, “Well done! We used to go see you perform in a small Port Melbourne pub to 15 people, and you’d give us your drink tickets. (You’ve) come a long way since those days, congratulations!” Meanwhile, Wa Tak Tau celebrated Chieng’s achievement as a new milestone, writing, “Recognition of your great talent. Congratulations.”
@MK-jn9uu expressed a desire to see more of Chieng, stating, “Why doesn’t he have a larger segment, let alone his own show? He consistently gets the most views.” Similarly, @patrickdgarez86 was highly impressed, remarking, “If Ronny became the permanent host, I would return as a regular viewer. Without denigrating any of the other hosts, this gentleman is on another level of delicious stinging sarcasm and polished, intelligent delivery. Mr Chieng is a perfect fit.”
@laurenbain1629 pleaded, “Ronny needs to host more!” echoing the sentiments of @judevector, who simply stated, “Please, please, all we want is more of Ronny.”
In addition to his success as a comedian, Chieng has also made notable acting appearances in films such as Crazy Rich Asians and Marvel’s Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. In 2017, he starred in the sitcom Ronny Chieng: International Student, which drew inspiration from his personal experiences as a Malaysian student in Australia.
Despite holding a degree in commerce and a degree in law, Chieng chose to pursue stand-up comedy after practicing law for a few months, a decision that has undoubtedly paid off as he continues to captivate audiences with his comedic talent.
