28-8-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced the acceleration of the National Digital Identity (IDN) development project as part of an initiative to enhance digital transformation within the public sector. The IDN, once implemented, will serve as a secure and trusted digital information platform, providing verified information and ensuring the safety and flexibility of online transactions.
Speaking after chairing the meeting of the Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council on Sunday, Prime Minister Anwar highlighted the significance of the National Digital Identity under the National Registration Department. This identity framework aims to authenticate individuals’ identities in the online realm and establish their virtual presence.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the meeting reached an agreement on initiatives to strengthen the startup ecosystem and increase the participation of local startup companies. Malaysia has set an ambitious target to be among the top 20 countries with a thriving startup ecosystem by 2030, while positioning Kuala Lumpur as a regional hub for digital innovation and startups.
Anwar emphasized that the startup ecosystem involves a total of 14 agencies, covering various aspects such as financing, product development, marketing, and expertise. In order to streamline and optimize the functions of these agencies, the government will implement a “single window” initiative. The goal is to establish 5,000 startup companies by 2025.
The Prime Minister further stated that the government remains committed to expanding digitalization programs within the public sector to ensure comprehensive digital development across the country.
