20-8-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Malaysian government has announced its decision to utilize the services of satellite Internet providers, including Starlink, to address the issue of inadequate Internet access in remote areas. While the move is considered a temporary measure, officials believe it will bridge the connectivity gap until long-term solutions are implemented.
Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications and Digital, highlighted the advantages of satellite Internet services, stating that they offer fast connection speeds, are easily deployable, and come at a reasonable price. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) sees this technology as a fitting solution to meet its objectives, according to Fahmi.
Speaking to Bernama during the Wangsa Maju Kita Punya event, held in conjunction with the National Day celebration at Taman Tasik Danau Kota, Fahmi further mentioned that discussions are underway to extend satellite Internet access to schools and health clinics in Sabah and Sarawak. In this regard, he is engaging with the Health Minister, Education Minister, and Rural and Regional Development Minister.
The government’s interest in satellite Internet technology was emphasized on July 15, when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed plans to deploy 40 Starlink satellite Internet devices across higher education institutions nationwide. The objective was to support students facing challenges in their studies due to unreliable connectivity. The decision came after a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Ibrahim and Elon Musk, the CEO of Starlink.
Furthermore, Fahmi disclosed that multiple telecommunication service providers are set to offer the 5G Rahmah Internet packages at discounted rates or with increased data capacities. The base price for these packages is RM60. He expressed confidence that by August 31, customers will have access to a 60GB data plan for the same price. Additionally, other companies are expected to provide even lower-priced options or higher data capacities.
The 5G Rahmah package is designed as a smartphone 5G data device bundle plan. It includes offerings such as the Samsung A14 5G and Honor 90 Lite 5G phones, available at a combined price of RM240 along with a 60GB data plan worth RM60 per month. The launch of this package is scheduled for August 31.
