18-6-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) In a move that could potentially reshape the nation’s economic and geopolitical landscape, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has revealed Malaysia’s intention to join the prominent intergovernmental organisation BRICS. This announcement comes as the Southeast Asian nation seeks to broaden its international alliances and fortify its global standing.
During an interview with Chinese outlet Guancha, hosted by Li Shimo, chairman of the Advisory Committee of the China Research Institute of Fudan University, Anwar unequivocally stated, “We have indicated that we are (interested in joining BRICS). We have made a decision.”
Acknowledging the formal procedures that lie ahead, the Prime Minister affirmed that the process would commence soon. Additionally, he disclosed that discussions on the matter are underway with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while Malaysia awaits a response from the South African government.
The BRICS alliance, initially formed in 2006, initially comprised Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining the fold in 2011. In a significant expansion earlier this year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates formally became part of the group, further enhancing its global reach.
