6-11-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysia’s electric vehicle adoption has reached a significant milestone with more than 45,000 registrations, marking a substantial shift towards sustainable transport in the Southeast Asian nation.
The Transport Ministry revealed that 45,737 electric vehicles have been registered with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) as of August 2023, crediting the surge to the government’s initiative of exempting EVs from road tax fees introduced last year.
In a comprehensive push towards green transportation, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand its electric bus fleet. The public transport operator aims to add 1,450 electric buses to its existing fleet, with 250 units already acquired during the first phase of implementation this year.
“We have achieved complete electrification of our urban rail transport network, representing a significant step towards sustainable public transportation,” the ministry stated in its parliamentary written response to Perikatan-Setiu representative Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir’s inquiry about green infrastructure development.
The ministry’s environmental commitment extends to renewable energy initiatives, with plans to install solar photovoltaic systems across 15 strategic locations. Key railway facilities, including the Batu Gajah, Seremban, and Kempas depots, will benefit from this solar expansion programme, implemented through collaboration between the Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).
