9-9-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) In response to the controversial detention of a Singaporean woman at the Malaysia-Singapore border, the Immigration Department of Malaysia has initiated a thorough investigation to assess whether its personnel adhered to departmental protocols during the incident.
Speaking at a press conference held at the department’s headquarters today, Immigration Director-General Datuk Ruslin Jusoh emphasised the gravity with which the department views the situation. “We are taking this matter very seriously, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway,” Ruslin stated, underscoring the department’s commitment to transparency and fairness.
The incident in question occurred on 7 August when the Singaporean woman attempted to enter Johor from Singapore. Reports suggest that an altercation ensued between the woman and immigration officers following complications with biometric scans. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the woman’s detention for a period of six days before her eventual release with a warning.
Ruslin elaborated on the scope of the investigation, saying, “Our primary objective is to ascertain the exact sequence of events that transpired at the border.” He stressed the importance of maintaining impartiality throughout the investigative process, ensuring that both the detained individual and the immigration officers involved are treated fairly.
The director-general was keen to reiterate Malaysia’s stance on international visitors, stating, “We warmly welcome visitors to Malaysia. However, it is imperative that those entering our country comply with the established rules and regulations.” This statement serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between hospitality and security that border control officers must maintain.
To ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation, Ruslin announced that the probe would be led by the deputy director-general of the Immigration Department.
