31-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysia has received two diplomatic notes from the United States Embassy, expressing dissatisfaction with the country’s refusal to designate Hamas as a terrorist group.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the demarche notes on October 13 and October 30, respectively. Additionally, a representative from Malaysia was summoned to the United States on October 18 for further discussions on the matter.
“Due to our reluctance to condemn Hamas and classify them as terrorists, I have been informed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received three demarche notes from the US Embassy,” stated Anwar during the Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.
This response from the United States is a result of Malaysia’s firm stance, which refuses to label Hamas as a terrorist organization.
During a recent solidarity event for Palestine held at the stadium, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s unwavering position, emphasizing our commitment to humanitarian considerations. He stressed that Malaysia views the incursion as unlawful and against international norms, given the longstanding issue that has persisted since 1948.
Anwar made these remarks during the parliamentary session today.
