24-5-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Former two-time Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad acknowledged on May 23, 2024, that corruption existed during his tenure as the country’s leader, but he firmly stressed that neither he nor his family members were involved in any corrupt practices.
Malaysia’s anti-graft agency, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), is currently investigating Mahathir and his two sons, Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir.
“During my time, there was corruption. But I myself was not involved in corrupt practices,” Mahathir remarked during an interview with CNBC.
He added, “I made sure that even my family cannot be involved in a government business because I might be accused of nepotism.”
The former Prime Minister acknowledged the ongoing MACC probe into him and his sons, who were separately ordered in January 2024 to declare their assets.
While the agency has not yet asked Mahathir to declare his assets, he expressed willingness to do so if necessary, as he claims to have nothing to hide.
“I and my sons will cooperate fully with the MACC,” he added.
On May 7, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki stated that the anti-graft agency has no intention to arrest Mahathir at this stage, despite the ongoing investigations.
Mahathir’s acknowledgment of corruption during his tenure as Prime Minister highlights the challenges Malaysia has faced in combating graft. However, his firm denial of personal involvement and willingness to cooperate with the authorities suggest a commitment to transparency and accountability.
