1-7-2023 (JAKARTA) On Friday evening, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the western province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, causing damages to houses and buildings. The country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency, led by Dwikorita Karnawati, confirmed the quake, which they earlier released as a 6.4-magnitude before revising it.
The earthquake occurred at 19:57 p.m. Jakarta time (1257 GMT) with its epicenter located 86 km northwest of Bantul district and a depth of 25 km under the seabed. According to the agency, the earthquake did not trigger giant waves. The tremors were felt in the nearby provinces of Central Java and East Java.
Following the main shock, more than five aftershocks were felt, prompting Dwikorita to advise people to avoid entering their homes if their walls were cracked by the tremors. The earthquake damaged houses and a hospital in Yogyakarta province, according to Indro Sambodo, a senior member of the quick response unit of the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency.
He said, “The roofs of the houses in Bantul district were damaged. The roofs fell down. Besides, parts of the walls of a hospital also got minor damages. Some houses situated along the coast also suffered minor damages.” The affected residents are now receiving assistance from the local government and emergency response teams.
