14-9-2024 (CHIANG RAI) The northern Thai district of Mae Sai in Chiang Rai province has embarked on a massive clean-up operation following severe flooding that left a trail of destruction in its wake. Local authorities and residents have mobilised to restore the area, with efforts commencing on 14 September 2024.
The extent of the damage became apparent as floodwaters began to recede, revealing a landscape marred by thick layers of mud, damaged vehicles, and affected homes and businesses. Social media platforms have been inundated with images showcasing the aftermath, painting a vivid picture of the challenges faced by the community.
The flooding event, which peaked on 13 September, has drawn attention from national agencies. The Geo-Informatics and Information Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) released satellite imagery from their THEOS-2 satellite, captured on 12 September. These high-resolution images revealed the extent of flooding across several districts in Chiang Rai province, including Khun Tan, Thoeng, and Phayao Mengrai. The satellite data clearly showed vast swathes of agricultural land and residential areas submerged under muddy floodwaters.
In response to the ongoing weather patterns, the Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the period of 14-17 September 2024. The advisory cautions about heavy to very heavy rainfall across various regions of Thailand, with particular emphasis on the Northeast, Central, Eastern, and the West Coast of the Southern regions. The department has stressed the increased risk of flash floods and forest runoff, especially in areas near hillsides, waterways, and low-lying territories.
Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential further complications arising from the continued rainfall.
