1-12-2023 (BANGKOK) A routine Lufthansa flight from Munich, Germany, to Bangkok, Thailand, turned chaotic on Wednesday when a heated argument between a husband and wife led to the diversion of the superjumbo Airbus A380. The 10-hour journey was disrupted by the altercation, prompting the pilots to inform air traffic control at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, India about a “situation and possible unruly passenger,” as reported by The Times of India.
According to officials, the wife sought the pilot’s intervention, reporting her husband’s threatening behaviour. The 53-year-old German national allegedly shouted at his wife, threw food, and ignored cabin crew requests to calm down. Sources, unnamed by The Times of India, revealed that the man attempted to burn a blanket using a lighter during the incident.
Both the husband and his wife, a Thai national, were disembarked in Delhi and taken into custody by immigration officials and federal police, according to The Indian Express. Lufthansa is reportedly coordinating with the local German embassy to decide whether to hand the husband over to Delhi police or allow him to continue the journey back to Germany.
Lufthansa confirmed the diversion in a statement to Business Insider, acknowledging an “unruly passenger” incident without providing specific details. The airline emphasized that safety and security for passengers and crew are their top priorities.
The disrupted flight eventually landed in Bangkok approximately two hours later than the scheduled arrival time, according to data from Flightradar24.
